Downloaded file chekcsum does not match

Maybe I have been negligent towards the verification of software I download over the Internet, but I (or anybody I ever met) have never tried to verify the checksum of the contents I download. And because of this, I have no idea about how to verify the integrity of the downloaded item. So how do I verify the checksum of a downloaded file?

Now I have the message "The file is possibly corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum," in white text on a black background when I try and boot into Windows 7. My guess is that my boot image is corrupt because the theme made its own boot image, and when the uninstall crashed, the file became corrupt.
